About the Gateway Mural Project:

The Gateway Mural Project is made possible by a collaboration between Councilmember Traci Park of the 11th Council District, Councilwoman Katy Yaroslavsky of the 5th Council District, the Mar Vista Community Council, the Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA), Caltrans, and neighbors, community members, and business owners like you! The goal of the Gateway Mural Project is to bring vibrancy to the 405 underpass located on Venice Blvd. to welcome in motorists and locals to Mar Vista and provide a visual introduction to Mar Vista’s tenets of communal resilience, ecological sustainability, emphasis on the arts and creativity, and unity in the face of adversity. This mural will serve as a placemaking icon for the city of Mar Vista, celebrating communal strength and restoration in the wake of the Palisades fires of 2025, as well as a visual icon to usher in the Olympics hosted by the city of Los Angeles 2028.

Get Involved!

The mural mockup was designed with the intention of being adapted based on community input and the submission of local residents as characters in the mural itself. To this end, we are opening up the design process to residents of Mar Vista to submit their neighbors, local legends, and landmarks for consideration to be featured in the mural in one of the following scenes:

  • Environmental Stewardship: Ocean View Farms Community Garden

  • The Mar Vista Farmer’s Market or other Centers of Local Entrepreneurship

  • The Arts and Music Culture Scene of Mar Vista

  • Neighborhood Heroes: First Responders (Fire Station 62, EMTs, etc)

  • Olympics 2028: Athletes with ties to Mar Vista or Southern California
